Numbers…they are huge in the world of sports. They tell everything about the games we play and watch, from how fast we run, to the score, to who our favorite players are, both in present day, and in the past.

Here at Kanawha, we love numbers too... because of who they represent to our Kanawha Family. When a number and a person become so associated together sometimes an organization will retire the number,  and place it in a special place of honor. We have two retired jerseys here with the Kanawha Redskins. These numbers are not given out to any player, nor will they be in the future.

Jersey #1 –Red Roberts:
Jersey #1 was retired by Kanawha in memory of our founder, Red Roberts. He was the first Kanawha Redskin. Kanawha was his dream, and he and his family gave years of time, effort, and enthusiasm to make sure that children in the West End had a place where they could live out their dreams of gridiron glory and sideline spirit, and learn the keys to the game that will influence them throughout their lives, both in and away from athletics.

Jersey #10 –Blake Wayland:
Jersey #10 was retired by Kanawha in memory of Blake Wayland. Blake played for many years with the Kanawha Redskins until his life ended way too young. Football was one of his passions, along with his dirtbike, and the outdoors. He approached the game with eagerness and enthusiasm, and was an exceptional teammate, offering support and encouragement to them, even when things were toughest for him. Blake's life embodied the type of attitude we hope to instill in all of our players and cheerleaders, that you don’t let your situation define you, your attitude and spirit define you.
