Sandston Jets | Saturday was a balmy 80 degrees in the sun. We were just coming off 2 heart wrenching defeats and had to travel to someone else’s domain to struggle for a victory. Not just any victory. This victory decided whether the skins were below 50 % or above 50% in the win column.
Let’s make things worse. Our Head Coach was AWOL (I hope you enjoyed the wedding, even more importantly, the party afterwards ), and the 1st play was a beautiful tackle by Stephan, which had unfortunate consequences for the Jets. Player # 3 appeared to be very badly hurt and the rescue squad was called in for assistance.
But fortunately, # 3 was fine, Coach Spangler took control of the reigns with marvelous execution (assisted by a first rate coaching squad) and the great tackling continued the rest of the day.
The very first series of plays, after the game resumed, was consumed by great tackling. Big Henry and Gabe (the tackling machine) made 2 consecutive hits, and was followed-up by a monster gang tackle by JJ, Andrew K, and Brock. This made the Jets turnover the ball on downs.
Then our Offense took over with unbridled enthusiasm. The very first play was a well scripted, well executed pass from Justin to Tyler for a completion and big gain. Hutch follow-up with a big run. Then he had a second big run for a first down.
Both times Hutch crushed through the middle following great Blocks from Big Alex, Mack, Nick H. and Carson. The defense was so focused on dealing with our O-Line that Jarion (JJ) was able to get free for a long completion (1st down).
Unfortunately, the ball was turned over on a fumble and that ended the first quarter.
The 2nd quarter began with our incredible defense on the field. Our defensive line was outstanding this week. Alex F., Cam, Jacob, Darion , Henry and of course Stephan really plugged the gaps all game and left the Jets with nowhere to go. The first play of the 2nd Quarter started with a fabulous surge by the line with Stephan breaking through and making a big hit causing the fumble. As has happened many of times before, Nick A. found his way on top of the ball to give the skins the possession.
The Offense took control and behind a fierce Offensive Line (Jason, Big Alex, Nick H., and Carson) continued to go after the ground game with big runs from Hutch and Will. Hutch also had some good gains running on the outside with great blocks from Bryson and Darion.
However, it was a little humbling for the Redskins to be stopped several times by # 6 of the defense, the frail but quick, moon walking Michael Jackson (just playing, no disrespect intended to the player or late star). We were unable to convert, so our defense came out ready to crush any attempted gains.
The Defensive Line (including Alex F. and Cam) jammed up the middle again, allowing big tackles from a combined Darion and Andrew, and Gabe, who seems to have found a niche of running them down from behind and pouncing on them. J.T. made a big hit holding the Jets to no gain and forcing a 4th down attempt. Then Tyler crashed through stopping the jets behind the line. 4 up 4 down.
Our Offense took over, and although Justin had some great pass attempts to Bryson, we were unable to convert and had to turn the ball over.
Our defense took the field again, and with it being close to half time, the crowd (including the rowdy bunch) assumed it would end on this series.
However, Tyler would not let it end in a lack luster way. When the Jets attempted a pass play to the flats, Tyler read it perfectly and was there to intercept. After completing the interception, he also completed a run all the way back for a TOUCHDOWN. 0 – 6. To follow this up, Justin completed a beautiful pass to Bryson to add 2 more points. Redskins 8 Jets 0.
The Rowdy Crowd went crazy. But half time gave them a chance to settle down (and beam a little bit). As usual, we were entertained by a delightful group of extremely talented young ladies.
The 3rd quarter started with the same excitement of the 2nd quarter ending. Will started the quarter with a nice run back of the kick off, and Hutch continued to run straight up the middle behind big blocks from Alex and my own Nick H. Mack and Carson also had big blocks, and Josh held strong on the end keeping the Jets penetration to a minimum.
The remainder of the game was full of great individual achievements; however, we were unable to score anymore points.
The Defense also played phenomenal. Cam made several great tackles, including one at the end of the 4th quarter to stop the final drive from the Jets.
J.T. had several great hits and applied pressure on the QB forcing incomplete throws. JJ, Darion and Will also had great drive stopping hits, and Nick A. and Stephan kept the gaps so plugged the Jets had no chance to gain yardage.
Tyler even hit the running back so hard he knocked both his shoes off in the 4th quarter.
Both the Offense and the Defense refused to tire or slow down through all 4 quarters. The excellent conditioning from our coaches and the excellent spirit of the children raged through to the end. With the final VICTORY SNAP and knee down by Justin, VICTORY was ours. 3 wins - 2 of those pesky things.
